Meet the Maker

Hi! Im Bekky, Owner and Curator of Crafty Starfish, Military wife and mum to 3 little rascals :)

I have been sewing on and off for years and following my first son (7years ago!) I started sewing childrens clothes. I have come a long way since then and decided to Create Crafty Starfish in 2020 / 2021. However, with an energetic 3 year old, a baby who wouldn’t sleep and being on an abroad posting it was quite a challenge, mix into that Covid (unable to get materials) I didn’t really get off the ground!

So, roll on a few years, a few more postings / houses and the 3rd baby and I started thinking about what I could do for me. Pre-children I was an Occupational Therapist, specialising in mental health which was long hours and I couldn’t see how that would work with how my life is now. I needed something that was adaptable, that I could fit around the military, 2 year deployments, within school hours ideally and term time. I love sewing and creating gorgeous things and was working out whether I could make it work.

I then saw an advert for ‘The Business Launch Accelerator Course’ run by MILSPO (Military Spouse, Partners and Other Halves) and I signed up quick before I changed my mind! It was an “online 8 week course that offers you the knowledge, tools, and support you need to turn your business vision into a thriving reality to enable you to launch your dream business”.

The course started in October and I was a bit worried about fititng it in with life and my husband being away, especially as it ran through the half term and it was the run up to Christmas. Then life suddenly got really crazy with family illness on top of everything else. But those that know me know that once I say I’m doing something, I do it! So, with a lot of late nights and a messy house! I completed the Business Course and re-launched Crafty Starfish on the 10th December 2024!

I now also rent a space in a gorgeous shop on Saltash highstreet - Lovingly Local which is made up of 20 different sellers, selling beautiful locally made / sourced products so am busy sewing stock for the shop, as well as my online orders! I have also signed up to a craft fair in June and hope to do a couple more if I can get my 3 little ones looked after (Grandma :) ) as my husband is off on a deployment.
